Does this look genuine to any of you??? Razz  Confused

I'm new to this game but 1, it looks too clean. 2, machine heads are wrong. 3, I didn't think they used the waterslide decals back then. 4, if it's been so well looked after by the original owner why doesn't it have the original case?
fran4001

Looks real to me. Raised logo is what I see, not the decal. Tuners also look correct to me. With the tweed case market being very lucrative, it could have sold separately for a tidy sum, say between $600-1,000 easily. Or just got damaged somehow. Very clean non-Selmer example is what I'm seeing.
manicab

I meant the decal on the back of the head fran, but is that there because it's non Selmer?

To Be fair to the seller he did say that he stuck them on after the new pickups were fitted  Smile

Quote...After installation, the labels (stickers) on the back of the head was attached.

Very Happy

I don't know how much this is worth...(That's if its real??) Razz
manicab

Oh yeh, serves me right for not re-reading after looking!
I guess if he was bulls**ting he wouldn't be honest about the replacement parts!
fran4001

A few more minor things: the treble pickup teacup knob is a reissue (haha) and there's a chance the base of the bridge is new. Looks a bit too sharp-edged but that's really nitpicking. The one thing that strikes me as odd is that Hofner would stick that sticker on the back of a customer's bass, unless the customer begged them to do so. And if he did, why would you want that on there anyway? It actually detracts from the value of the bass and automatically makes a potential buyer question it. Why raise a flag like that on a lark? And lastly, I may be wrong, but I didn't think you can send (or in this local case) or just drop off a bass at Hofner for repairs. Especially minor electrical ones. Odd?
Peacefrog35

It does look clean, looks very very nice too.  I was ok until I too saw that made in Germany tag, wondered if it was a reissue with vintage parts, but the binding on the necks on the new ones are a bit different. I tend to think this one is legit.  It's a beauty. Wow, 64s seem to be growing from trees lately! haha
Peacefrog35

I just took a closer look and while I'm not an expert, I would bet my own 64 that this is legit. Everthing about it looks like the real deal.  The shape of the nut is different on newer basses, the color is really hard to fake, I've yet to see any reissues that have this color...even the close ones are different.  The close ups show checking that only the vintage ones tend to have...while it's in phenominal condition, it still has the checking that one would expect from a 49 year old bass in great condition. I would say this bass is a winner!
fran4001

I thought reissue too at very first glance. Usually the first thing I look for is the end of the neck at the neck pickup. All the old ones are rounded at the corners there and it sometimes causes the binding to taper out thinner too. The new  German V64's and the CTs are all sharply squared with no change in binding thickness. Plus the new frets are thicker and over hang the binding more. Plus the other signposts we all know and love....

Well Then! Well then! Well Then...Hofnernuts !!  Very Happy

Perhaps the seller either works at Hofner or knows someone who does, that could account for the rewound pickups and the sticker on the back of the neck.
Real! in my modest opinion. And the price is climbing. Interesting!

What about a competition? Everybody guesses the final price & the nearest buys me a pint.

My guess 1,500 euro.

fran4001

Congratulations, it's amazing! As usual, I recommend Thomastik JF324H strings. (No surprise)  We have to find you an original teacup for the treble pickup control! Other than that, I'd definitely get those pickups rewound and re-installed. What a terrific bass!
den1

Thomastik JF324H ....That's great Fran...but they are $100 with import duty!!.....We cant  seem to buy them over here.

Any other recommendations..Alternatives
